A note on the use of music in these videos
Like many people working in independent media, I am a proponent of Fair Use. The majority of the musical material in my videos falls clearly under the protection of Fair Use, which is to say in this case that only part of a song is used.
In cases where more than a small part of a music track is used, I have made efforts to contact the labels of the artists concerned to obtain permission to use their material, or to purchase a license to use it. However as several industry bloggers have noted, most labels do not have systems in place to grant licenses to or accept money from individuals. So essentially although producers are required to obtain licenses for the material they use, in most cases this is not actually possible, unless that producer happens to work for a major body such as a radio station group or other broadcaster.
Initiatives like the PodSafe Music Network, which provides access to music licensed for podcasting and other online distribution, are the direction in which things should be heading, but for the time being - for music not part of these initiatives - I stand by Fair Use as justification for my (non-commercial) use of music in these videos.
